Homeworld: Turán II in the Hunnia Cluster

Chapter Backstory
Created from the gene-seed of the White Scars, the Turul Rangers inhabit the far-off Hunnia Cluster of the Imperium. They retain the ritual of the Blooding, which they also call the Blood Pact, and their predecessors' reliance on mobility. They also have their own way of doing things, which might estrange them from other Astartes.
Hunnia consists of six inhabitable systems, with the following Imperial planets: Turán II, Hungaria, Hunnia IV, Transylvania, Burgenland and Dalmatica III. Most of these are agri-worlds and they supply the neophytes to the Chapter, and the manpower to the two regiments and one auxiliary corps to the Astra Militarum. Hungaria is the traditional place to bury fellow Astartes who fell in battle, and members of the Chapter hold that the soil of Hungaria constitutes an integral part of their being - hence their famous warcry. When they intend to scare their enemies, they also loudly chant the traditional call 'Nobozmeg!!!' before a charge, an ancient Nomadic challenge.
Turán II was one of the planets incorporated to the Empire by the White Scars' conquests. There the Astartes making planetfall after a mostly peaceful compliance action saw that the people share some of the nomadic lifestyle they preferred. The planet, being far away from the frontlines, was left undisturbed during the Horus Heresy, and records of it in the central archives of the Legion re-emerged only sometimes before the Second Founding. Then a successor chapter was created, and their Fortress-Monastery raised, orbiting the planet.
The warriors of the Chapter fought many glorious campaigns, but shortly before the beginning of the Era Indomitus, were almost wiped out as a result of Chaos corruption.
It all began with Chapter Master Petor Megesius, who, feeling the Chapter had arrived at a crossroads when ordered to cleanse the otherwise peaceful Bruxelles System of Traitors and Heretics, prayed to the Warp instead of his Emperor, and had his prayers answered by the Ruinous Powers dwelling there. Petor did not share his knowledge with anyone, waiting for the crucial moment to let the rest of the Chapter learn of his grand plan of turning on the Traitors' side and leading them against local Imperial authorities.
He did not know that Captain of his 1st Company, Frank Gurtan, had overheard his conversation with a lesser Demon sent by the Chaos Gods, and plotted his downfall. Ambition surged in Gurtan, and during the preliminary actions to the invasion of the Bruxelles System, masking it as an accident, he cast Megesius into the overheated engine room of the battleship Zrinyi. He was then elected acting Chapter Master first, and then confirmed in his new role by the ten Battle Captains unequivocally.
But one Captain, that of the 4th Company, named Victorvs Vrbanvs, had his doubts about their new commander. Vrbanvs was an astute warrior and a natural-born leader of men, and also had a finesse for politics. He befriended the Chapter's Librarians and Chaplains and suggested to them, as if the idea were their own, to keep a close watch on Gurtan. Truly enough, the psykers of the Chapter began hearing whispers of the Warp from the Chapter Master's quarters again - Gurtan did not end Megesius' rule to save the Chapter, but to take on the role his predecessor intended, in leading a terrible crusade against nearby Imperial worlds, sacking or destroying them in the process.
Vrbanvs' plans to oust Gurtan as a traitor and heretic did not succeed at first, because the assault on the outlying Strasbourg System had began in earnest, and the Chapter needed to focus their resources. However, this proved a fatal chance for Gurtan to turn some of the Astartes to his side, board the cruiser Altus Zerete and attempt to side with the Traitors. Vrbanvs, aboard his own ship the Nero rammed and boarded the Altus Zerete, and fought a bitter hand-to-hand combat with Gurtan. However, the traitorous Chapter Master fled, killing many of his former brethren in the process, and Vrbanvs had to fall back on the Nero before the Altus made warp translation.
Although by seniority the ancient Captain Sandorus Penteres of 1st Company should have been elected the next Chapter Master, the title fell to the brave Vrbanvs, and he led the Turul Rangers in a victorious campaign against Strasbourg, and then the Bruxelles System. He proved to be a wise leader, always faithful to the Emperor, with vengeance in his heart against Frank Gurtan. Every remaining Battle-Brother was questioned by the Inquisition, with the aid of Vrbanvs himself, and proven beyond a doubt to remain unfailing in his duties and allegiance.
Nowadays, the Turul Rangers mostly adhere to the Codex Astartes and its revisions. Compared to other Chapters, they have a better stock of new recruits, thus an oversized 10th company. Scout squads are incorporated to the Chapter's battle doctrine in a support role, emphasizing on mobility and rapid strikes. Furthermore, each Company has three to five Lieutenants instead of the two dictated by the Codex.
The Chapter is quite low on vehicles, and only has twenty Rhinos at the Fortress-Monastery. These are under the Chapter HQ's direct command: they are activated and join the strike force once action is imminent. (Armored support for the Chapter is otherwise mostly provided by the affiliated Astra Militarum forces, notably the Egri Vitéz Cavalry Assault Corps and the 1st and 2nd Honvéd Regiments, along with the nearby Adepta Sororitas Chapel of Saint Margarete and Saint Cunigunde.) The Chapter Techmarines may also have made just a few non-Codex compliant modifications to the vehicles...
Gene-seed Corruption: The Curse of Turán. Especially Firstborn marines suffer from this ailment, which causes issues with their brain, turning them into hate-spewing monsters and gradually losing the integrity of their spinal column. The legend of the Chapter says that this is the cost they have to pay for the turning of Frank Gurtan, former Chapter Master to Chaos. Gurtan, warping in-system aboard his cruiser Altus Zerete, sometimes manages to sway individual Astartes afflicted by the curse to his side, where augments and powers of the Warp manage to delay - but never stop - the deterioration.
Current Threats to the Chapter:
- A Traitor fleet led by the Chaos-corrupted circle called Domus Nostris Iobicus, with former Commodore Precedus Novacus in charge, is skirting the Hunnia System, believing it their rightful heritage. Their cults had found following amongst the populace of Hunnia IV and Transylvania.
- Another Hive Fleet scouting force is converging on the Sector and is destined to arrive in one or two years. Some in the Chapter worry about the presence of genestealer cults on Burgenland.
Current Deployment: 4th and 6th Companies, under the overall command of Captain Georgius Guiasus, aided by Dreadnought Brother Iudicius Vargas of the 3rd Company, participate in a mopping-up action on the extremities of the Bruxelles System. The rest of the Chapter is training and recuperating before another campaign begins, most likely against the Greenskin foe in the Oradea System.
Chapter Battle Honors:
- The Liberation of Lambatiqua Prime: a Chaos Cult (of mostly Slaaneshi inspiration) has taken over Lambatiqua, which the Turul Rangers battled and finally defeated.
- The Five Battles of the Bruxelles System: after a clash in space and a land invasion, the Chapter fought three more consecutive decisive actions against the Traitors in the Bruxelles System.
- The Siege of Borshod-Abauy: A large Ork host had taken the border zone planet Borshod-Abauy, which the Chapter, along with other Astartes forces, had managed to oust after a multiple-year campaign.
- The Battle of the Southern Border: A Hive Fleet tendril appeared at the galactic south of the Hunnia System, which the Chapter and the local AM Regiments managed to fend off after bloody losses. At this point, the Chapter was down to less than six hundred Astartes in total, the 3rd company being especially depleted and down to five survivors only. The neophytes brought into 10th company as a safety measure were affected by the Curse of Turán in large numbers.
